DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES

KIKUYU COLOBUS ENRICHMENT

THE PROBLEM

At the Denver Zoo, the colobi live in a group of three males and one female. Two of the primates are struggling with staying at the target weight that they should be at. Through the increase in physical activity, hopefully this can be solved.

DESIGNS

Through various designs, the best solution for motivating the most activity in the colobus can be discovered. On this page, multiple designs are taken into consideration.

BACKGROUND

The colobus is an arboreal primate originating in central Africa near Kenya. Their primary diet consists of leaves and some fruits, and they typically live in groups with one dominant male.

ABOUT US

Every year, Northglenn High School’s biomedical STEM seniors embark on a capstone project in which they attempt to create a testable device that solves a medical problem. Occasionally student groups pair with the Denver Zoo to create enrichment devices to better the lives of the zoo’s primates, and to enhance their health.
